State Democracy Defenders Action Denounces Reintroduction of “SAVE ACT”

WASHINGTON — Following the reintroduction of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act (H.R. 22) in the U.S. House of Representatives today, State Democracy Defenders Action Policy Director Gabe Lezra released the following statement:

“This legislation threatens to disenfranchise and silence millions of otherwise eligible voters by effectively dismantling various well-established methods of voting and registering to vote. It is a clear attack on voter access and a step towards an authoritarian government.

“It imposes burdensome and unnecessary steps as a precondition for voter registration while relying on error-prone databases that significantly increase the risk that eligible voters–and particularly Black, Brown, and immigrant populations— will be silenced and prevented from exercising their fundamental rights.”

“Members of Congress must stand firmly for every voter’s right to participate in our democracy by opposing this dangerous legislation.”

State Democracy Defenders Action brings together a nonpartisan team to work with national, state and local allies across the country committed to upholding the rule of law, fighting against autocracy and defending the Constitution.
