State Democracy Defenders Action Statement on Trump’s Motion to Dismiss in New York Election Interference Criminal Case

In response to President-elect Donald Trump’s motion to dismiss his New York election interference criminal case, Amb. Norman Eisen (ret.), co-founder of State Democracy Defenders Action, released the following statement:

“President-elect Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts by a jury of everyday Americans. He committed these crimes in order to interfere in the 2016 election, not as part of any ‘official acts’ during his first term as president, and so immunity does not apply here. Trump, like everyone else, should be held accountable for his crimes. To dismiss Trump’s convictions because he won re-election would undermine accountability, subvert the rule of law, and set a dangerous precedent that political success outweighs lawful behavior.”
